One Life Saved How Many Others Lost

Sometimes the news is just too much to bear, but today I read an article about a life saved by the Clarkstown NY Police Department. It inspired me to do a little research and I was pretty surprised at what I discovered. Yesterday the Clarkstown Police were called to a home for a possible drug overdose. The EMT’s arrived and administered Narcan (Nalaxone) to a blue, unresponsive man who was revived and transported to the hospital. Wow… what is this Narcan. Narcan (Nalaxone) is a prescription medication dispensed as a single dose through a nasal applicator to a patient exhibiting signs of a narcotic overdose. The application of Narcan has proven effective in reversing an opioid overdose such as heroin, morphine, oxycodone, hydrocodone and codeine. I also discovered that on April 1, 2006, a new public health law took effect making it legal in New York State for non-medical persons who have successfully participated in Opioid Overdose Prevention Program training to administer an opioid antagonist {Narcan) to another individual to prevent an overdose from becoming fatal. Wait a minute… that was over 8 years ago, yet in today’s article it stated that this is first use of Narcan by a police agency in Rockland County and that the Clarkstown Police Department was one of the first in the state to be trained. It was only earlier this month that a community Overdose Prevention program was funded and establish by the State Attorney to train and equip law enforcement agencies throughout the state. Bravo to Clarkstown but what took the Attorney General so long, how many lives could have been saved in the last 8 years? Another training initiative has been spearheaded by a grass-roots organization based in Brooklyn, VOCAL-NY, offering training and awareness programs to the general public.  With the recent increase in opiate deaths, this training and awareness can save many lives.
