Bow Tie Cinemas New City

My husband and I are fans of  small independent films and foreign films. We usually travel to Jacob Burns Theater in Pleasantville, or to Greenburg, both in Westchester Couny to see them. It's not far, only a 20 minute trip from Nyack, but it requires crossing the Tappan Zee Bridge and paying the toll.

Last Tuesday, we wanted to see Omar after reading the good review in the New York Times. It was playing in Westchester, but saw that it was also playing in the Bow Tie Cinema in New City. We had never been there and decided to give it a try. We rushed around as it was late and wanted to get a good seat. When we arrived we thought the theater was closed, there was only 1 person in the lobby and he was the guy who sold the tickets behind the concession stand. We bought the tickets, only $6 per person on Tuesdays, and entered the dark theater where there were only 2 other people. We couldn't believe it. Usually the Westchester theaters are crowded, even during the week. Where are all the Rockland people who like foreign films?
When the movie was over we spoke to the ticket taker/concession guy, who said that unfortunately, the theater is rarely filled, and that during the week there is usually only a handful of people.
We came to find out that Bow Tie Cinemas offers films at such low prices. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday  $7 and Tuesday $6.
Also, Saturday mornings they offer old classics at 11 am, and they have the Insomnia films at 11:30 pm on weekends, mostly cult classics.
We went back the next night to see another film and were the only 2 people in the theater until another couple entered just as the movie was about to begin. When we turned around to look at them we couldn't believe it and all had a great laugh. They were our good friends from West Nyack
Although it was nice and quiet, we were lamenting on the lack of audience and hope that the Bow Tie Cinemas doesn't turn into another blockbuster chain.
We'll keep going and talk it up to everyone we know so we can keep good films in Rockland.
