The annual Knickerbocker Ice Festival, celebrating Rockland Lake’s 19th century ice industry, will be held January 28-29 at Rockland Lake State Park.

For a mere $250 donation to the event, you can build your own IGLOO (molds, snow, and a sign for your icy house supplied) then add décor items of your choice. “The real estate market at Rockland Lake is booming!” proclaims the flyer (well, let’s hope THAT’S a sign of the times!) urging you to be a citizen of the Igloo Village in the KIDZ Ice Park.

Then watch the fantastic ice-carving competition, attend the bonfire, dance in the park, and learn a little about the ice industry here. Ice from little old Rockland Lake was considered the purest in the region, attracting buyers from as far away as Asia….and used in the finest establishments in New York City!

There’s a lot of history up there in back of the state park’s modern swimming pool and the rented fishing boats….go and learn a little about it!

Or be an armchair visitor at the website….
