American Artists Honored At Upper Nyacks Hook Mountain

Wondering about the mystery sculpture that appeared recently at Hook Mountain Park? At first glance, it appears to be just a blob of bronze….but, look closer at the photo included here, then go to the park and read the plaque on the installation. It’s one of three sculptural markers placed at public sites along the Hudson to honor the first true American school of painting, the famed Hudson River School. And the bronze forms a 3-dimensional “window” to view the river, including classical elements (columns, etc.) often used by members of the Hudson River School and natural, free-form leafy trees. The pieces were done by Greg Wyatt , who was born and raised in Grand View-on-Hudson.  His father was William Stanley Wyatt, a painter and professor of fine arts at Columbia University and the City College of New York, and well-known in the Rockland County art community. Greg Wyatt works primarily in cast bronze, is the sculptor-in-residence at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York City and directs the Academy of Art at the Newington-Cropsey Foundation in Hastings-on-Hudson. He has produced a number of important pieces, and bases his work on the philosophy of "spiritual realism," merging realistic images and abstract masses of form, space and energy.
