The law regulating tree removal in Montebello which limits the number to 4 trees per year has been ruled constitutional by a state appellate panel. The decision overturned an earlier ruling by Ramapo Justice Rhoda Schoenberger stating that the law was unconstitutional. The Montebello Tree Preservation and Landscape Maintenance Law was put in place to preserve trees, provide aesthetic streetscapes and regulate and prevent conditions which cause increased surface runoff and soil erosion.  Montebello has been a member of the Tree City USA program since 2007, and was designated the first Tree City in Rockland County by the American Arbor Association.
