Cinco De Mayo Festivities Keep Nyack Dancing
Dated: May 3 2021
Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican culture which commemorates the unlikely victory of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin over French forces at the battle of Puebla May 5th, 1862. The celebration started in California’s Mexican-American communities. The holiday jumped to national attention in the 1980’s when marketers, especially beer companies, heavily advertised the event. The tradition grew in popularity prompting Congress in 2005 to issue a resolution calling on the people of the United States to observe May 5th with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in restaurants and bars all over Rockland. Now many schools have added this as a day of Mexican awareness. Casa del Sol on Main street in Nyack always has an extremely festive night. As Congress has decreed, Get out and enjoy some Mexican culture tonight.
