Clarkstown Skunk Wars

I live on a heavily treed property in Valley Cottage. I love the serenity and privacy, but must give up the ability to grow a lush lawn, as little sunlight filters down through the canopy. I do have one small patch, strategically located, that gets sun. I have nurtured, fertilized, weeded, raked, aerated, and generally loved this tiny lawn. It has gotten to that “sink your toes in softness”, and I adore it. Three days ago, a marauding skunk and/or his gang of hoodlums has decided to dig this patch up. This means war!!!
I do not want to hurt the culprits, nor stink up my backyard. I chased him away with much foul language last night, but I really don’t think my insults broke his spirit. I installed my new defense this evening. It will remain to be seen who wins this battle. Skunks shun bright light. To that end, I installed a motion sensor flood light at lawn level. When he (she, they…) enter the combat zone, bright light will illuminate the little stinkers like fleeing felons in a prison break-out. I can only hope this is the most drastic step I will be forced to take in this new addition to my nature wars. You don’t even want to know about the perpetually losing battle with deer and my garden….Updates to follow!
