Please Avoid The Giant Turtle In The West Nyack Roadway

I had to stop traffic yesterday to allow a slow moving snapping turtle to finish crossing West Nyack road. It is now egg lying season, and they are crossing Rockland County roads in large numbers. There are so many crossing Western Highway in West Nyack and Blauvelt that signs have been erected.  There is even a turtle crossing guard posted at times. Drivers are urged to drive with caution. These giant turtles trek long distances from water to lay their 40-70 eggs in a hole they dig out with their hind legs. They then cover the eggs with dirt and let solar energy do the incubating. These nests can be up to mile from water, so often numerous roads are crossed by the prehistoric reptiles. The hatchlings will make their way back to water when they emerge from the dirt nest sometime in September.

Did you know the common snapping turtle is the State reptile of New York State? Image title
