A perennial favorite, Nyack’s nesting pair of falcons are supposed to raise yet another family on the Tappan Zee Bridge this spring. The live feed cam has been down so I do not know if they are there or if the new bridge construction has created a deterrent to their nesting. I have heard wild numbers fluctuating between $70,000 and $500,000 to relocate the nesting box to the new bridge. Click here to see if the cam is operating yet. Once almost extinct due to DDT pesticide use, peregrine falcons have made a remarkable comeback and can be seen nesting on skyscrapers and bridges throughout the New York area. The peregrine falcon is the fastest animal on earth and can reach speeds of 200 mph in a hunting dive. Their prey is exclusively birds with pigeons being a local favorite. They swoop from great heights hitting the wing of their intended meal to disable the bird yet not injure themselves. The larger female will lay 3-4 eggs in March and the chicks will hatch approximately 30 days later.
Let’s hope another generation is in the works.
