Peregrine Falcon Nests In Nyack

The male peregrine falcon has returned to his nest atop the Tappan Zee Bridge in Nyack. He is awaiting his partner who should arrive soon. Falcons mate for life and return to the same nest each year. The peregrine falcon is the fastest animal on earth and can reach speeds of 200 mph in a hunting dive. Their prey is exclusively birds with pigeons being a local favorite. They swoop from great heights hitting the wing of their intended meal to disable the bird yet not injure themselves. The larger female will lay 3-4 eggs in March and the chicks will hatch approximately 30 days later. Once almost extinct due to DDT pesticide use, peregrine falcons have made a remarkable comeback and can be seen nesting on skyscrapers and bridges throughout the New York area. A live feed cam has been placed outside the nest so you can view the magnificent birds at any time. The link is
