Thelist of hurricane names is determined by the United Nations WorldMeteorological Organization. The NHC uses six lists in rotation andthey are recycled every six years.
Theoriginal name lists featured only women's names. In 1979, men's nameswere introduced, alternating with the women's names. The storms arenamed alphabetically. The letters Q,U,X,Y,Z are not used.
Twonames that won’t be on any more hurricane lists are Florence andMichael, which will be replaced with Francine and Milton on the 2024list. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration typicallyretire hurricane names when a storm is particularly destructive ordeadly. Hurricane Florence caused more than 40 deaths in September2018 when it left heavy flooding across the Carolinas and Virginia.Hurricane Michael devastated parts of the Florida Panhandle inOctober 2018 and is blamed for at least 45 deaths and widespreaddamage.
Infamousstorm names such as Sandy (2012) and Katrina (2005) have previouslybeen retired.
